Northwest Sailing Association (NWSA) is thrilled to announce our upcoming presentation by Captain Adele Arlitt, an accomplished sea captain with a wealth of sailing experience and incredible stories to share. Join us as Adele shares her remarkable experiences and lessons learned while living aboard her sailboat, Rosebud, a 22-foot Westerly.

⚓️Meet Our Speaker…⚓️

Captain Adele Arlitt is a seasoned sailor and currently a tender boat captain in Chicago. She began her sailing journey when she discovered the Northwest Sailing Association in 1989. Starting as a novice with NWSA, she quickly embraced the world of sailing, learning the ropes on her first boat, a 22-foot Westerly Cirrus. Since then, she has navigated her way to incredible experiences, shaping not only her own life but also the lives of her children, who have all followed in her maritime footsteps.

Captain Adele’s journeys include sailing from Jacksonville, Florida, to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where she spent five enriching years. One Caribbean sailing trip would truly test her skills and resolve. Faced with severe weather and equipment failure, Adele found herself in a harrowing situation as she sailed down the coast of Cuba, resulting in the Cuban Coast Guard picking her up from her sinking vessel. After losing her identification in the sea, she stayed a week at an Havana immigration detention center. Despite these hardships, she experienced great kindness and warmth from the Cuban people.

Throughout her sailing career, Adele has also captained historic tall ships in the Great Lakes, embracing a life of adventure and self-sufficiency. Her single-handed sailing adventures are tales of resilience and the bonds formed with her loyal dog, Buddy, who has been by her side through thick and thin.
