About us
Welcome to Note Lovers - Live Music Listening in Ottawa!
This is a group where we welcome you to join us listening to good music here in town. We love local small venues, the kind of place we can chat together before the show. The kind of place we can meet the musicians. Most of the music is jazz, blues, and folk. But now and then some tango, flamenco, rock and musicals. If you are up on Sunday mornings, we do like a classical collection on the Quebec side so check that out. Festivals in summer.
Please buy tickets early when you want to see a show. Small venues with great musicians sell out! Out of courtesy for those on the wait-list, always cancel your RSVP if you are not coming.
I ask that you have a real portrait photo on your MeetUp profile because at these events we really are looking for you. Please look for me, sit with the group, and get to know others who like to listen to live music!
Good times!

Bitches Brew, Bobby Previte - Jazz Fest!
National Arts Centre, 1 Elgin Street, at Confederation Square, Ottawa, ON, CAHey, Note Lovers, it’s Carolyn here. Come join us for Bobby Previte’s Pocket Orchestra plays Bitches Brew at the Ottawa Jazz Festival!
This one is for people who like their jazz a little wilder, deeper, and more electric.
Bitches Brew, released by Miles Davis in 1970, is one of the landmark recordings in modern music — not just jazz, but also rock, funk, soul, and everything that came after. It was spacious, hypnotic, strange, groovy, and absolutely fearless. Bobby Previte’s Pocket Orchestra won’t simply recreate it note-for-note. The idea is to use Bitches Brew as a springboard and push the music forward into new territory.
Bobby Previte is a major composer, drummer, and improviser whose work lives in the space between written composition and spontaneous invention. So expect something atmospheric, exploratory, rhythmically alive, and probably a bit mind-expanding.This is a great pick for listeners who enjoy Miles Davis, electric jazz, experimental groove, and concerts that feel more like a sonic journey than a polite recital.
For anyone wanting to turn this into a truly mind-bending evening, consider also buying a ticket to the 8:00 p.m. Max Richter concert in Southam Hall, just upstairs after this show. Electric Miles Davis-inspired jazz followed by Max Richter’s lush, cinematic orchestral music will be a perfect night.

Luminous strings: Max Richter at NAC!
NAC 1 Elgin Street Fourth stage, 1 Elgin Street Fourth stage,, Ottawa, ON, CAHey, Note Lovers, it's Carolyn here. Come join us for Max Richter with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble at the National Arts Centre.
Max Richter is one of today’s most influential contemporary classical composers, known for music that feels cinematic, emotional, meditative, and quietly powerful. His sound lives somewhere between classical music, minimalism, ambient music, and film score — spacious, melancholic, and deeply atmospheric.
For this concert, Richter is joined by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble for music from In a Landscape and The Blue Notebooks. Expect an evening of luminous strings, gentle repetition, emotional stillness, and music that slowly opens up around you.
I'll be there shortly before it starts only because.....

Hiromi Uehara at the Montreal Jazz Festival Théâtre Maisonneuve!
Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts, 260 Blvd. De Maisonneuve Ouest 2nd floor,, Montreal, QC, CAHi everyone Just a quick note about Hiromi. She’ll be playing in Ottawa on June 21 outdoors, which will be a really fun festival atmosphere if you’d like to see her locally on the lawn. Summer evening, big stage, lots of energy — it’ll be a great vibe!
I’m going to keep my Montreal tickets. She’s playing at Théâtre Maisonneuve, which has beautiful acoustics, and I specifically chose seats where I can really hear the detail and nuance of the piano. Worth the little trip!
However you choose to see her, it’s going to be a fantastic show. ✨

Montreal show info:
Hey Note Lovers, it's Carolyn here. Come join us for High Octane Jazz fusion virtuoso pianist Hiromi Uehara in Montreal!Ever since the 2003 release of her debut, Another Mind, Hiromi has
electrified audiences with a creative energy that encompasses &
eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication.
On her new album, Silver Lining Suite, Hiromi further exemplifies her virtuosic hybridity and emotional range, finding strength & hope
amidst the turmoil of the pandemic. Born in Hamamatsu, Japan in 1979,
Hiromi's first piano teacher, Noriko Hikida, exposed Hiromi to jazz and
introduced her to the great pianists Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson.
She enrolled in the Yamaha School of Music and started writing music.
Hiromi moved to the United States in 1999 and studied at the Berklee
College of Music in Boston.Among her mentors was jazz bassist/arranger Richard Evans, who took Hiromi's demo to his friend, the legendary pianist Ahmad Jamal. Evans co-produced Another Mind with Jamal.
Another Mind was a critical success in North America and Japan, where
the album shipped gold and received the Recording Industry
Association of Japan's Jazz Album of the Year Award. Hiromi's
astonishing debut was but a forecast of the shape of jazz to come.
In 2009, she recorded with pianist Chick Corea on Duet, a live
recording of their concert in Tokyo. She also appeared on bassist
Stanley Clarke's Grammy-winning release, Jazz in the Garden.
In the summer of 2021, Hiromi performed at the opening ceremonies
of the Tokyo Olympics.Date: Sunday June 28, 2026
