Re: [newtech-1] Transitioning from Product Development to Product Marketing

Good stuff.

So, in interviewing for a product marketing position, my thought is that you might be measured on metrics. And, if most of the products you've worked on were for start-ups or start-up like corporations, which gained little traction and were shelved for one reason or another, how do you communicate your effectiveness?

I did have to make that switch, although i don't consider it necessarily successful yet, so i can't promise a relevant, insightful advice.

I'd say it appealed mostly to my ability to be synthetic, since it was mostly a switch from having all the time i needed to explain ideas to the inside team, to having to be relevant in seconds when talking to the outside world.
Basically, it's switching from the question "What's your precise idea about that one particular feature?" to "Why is your product relevant, in one sentence?". The skills needed to answer those two questions are not the same.

Except for that you find similar skills though, like building a system that makes sense altogether (whether it be the product, or the marketing plan), or anticipating stuff people might need (whether need to use, or need to understand).

My 0.02, for what it's worth.
