2014 Bee Packages - April 5th and April 26th Distribution

Dear Friends,

If you are interested in taking part in this year's group purchase of packages of bees and/or queens, here are the plans:This year we will be doing a group PICKUP and DISTRIBUTION.  We will pick up bee packages (which include queens) and individual queens from Mann Lake's facility in Wilkes-Barre, PA and deliver them to a central site in Brooklyn on two different weekends in April. The group will share the cost of delivery. We expect the delivery charge to be $8-$10 per package and around $5 per queen, to cover gas and facilities costs. This charge will be payable in CASH at pickup: and exact amount will be determined closer to the event. We will distribute at 33 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, near the Nevins Street stop on the 4,5 and 2,3 trains.

The two weekends we will pick up from Mann Lake are Saturday, April 5 (distributing that afternoon and Sunday, April 6) and Saturday, April 26th (distributing that afternoon and Sunday, April 27.)Factors including weather could push the date later: you’ll need to be flexible to pick up, care for and hive your bees on whatever day distribution takes place. Of course you will need to have your hives and gear ready beforehand to receive your bees. Experienced beekeepers who have equipment ready may want to take advantage of the April 5th date to get a jump on the season.

NEW BEEKEEPERS who are taking part in the class equipment purchase should order for the April 26-27 distribution, after the equipment distribution happens. DO NOT buy bees for APRIL 5-6: YOU WILL NOT HAVE EQUIPMENT YET!

To order bees and queens:

1) Go to Mann Lake's site: place your order online (or by phone) as soon as possible: they do run out. Pay Mann Lake directly.Note that Mann Lake is offering a $20 gift certificate per customer who orders bees. Details are online: the gift certificates will be mailed to individual purchasers.
The item numbers to choose from are:For our April 5th Wilkes-Barre, PA pick up (April 5-6 Brooklyn distribution):BE-051 Package Bees - 3 lb. (includes queen)BE-052 Queen Bee For our April 26th Wilkes-Barre, PA pick up (April 26-27 Brooklyn distribution):BE-071 Package Bees - 3 lb. (includes queen)BE-072 Queen Bee The bees are Italians from Northern California, and all queens are unmarked.

2) BE SURE to indicate in your order (either online or on the phone) that your bees will be picked up by JIM FISCHER / WALKER STEVENSON.

3) TELL US you have placed your order so we know to pick up your bees. up. Don't let your bees get left behind in Pennsylvania!
Let us know about your purchase as soon as possible using these two notification forms:
For PACKAGES (these include their own queen)

Want to help with the distribution? Please respond to this email with VOLUNTEER in the subject line: it's an unforgettable experience, and a fun chance to hang out with fellow beekeepers. Get in touch also if you have a truck or van and want to make a road trip!

With many thanks to Ruby Chen, here's a valuable FAQ

Please check it out before writing with questions.

Thanks also to Jim Fischer, Jon Derow and Mike Barrett for all their hard work. Here's to a great bee season!Yours,Walker Stevenson
