What we're about

Backgammon players of New York: NYC Backgammon is the largest group of active and participating members in NYC; meeting great people to play with has never been easier. New York City Backgammon was founded in April, 2008.

The main meetup is held once each month on a non-fixed Tuesday night and is typically scheduled about one month in advance. Set your account to receive our emailed event notices so you don't miss a meetup. (see instructions at the bottom*). The meetups run from 6pm to approximately 11:30 pm. Attendance varies between 20-40 players. People can come and go as they like for casual play. Most months, a group lesson is given at around 7:45. Up to three times a year (typically January, May and September) a tournament will be held starting at 7:00 instead of the lesson, format to be announced.

Location is downstairs at:

Josie Wood's Pub

11 Waverly Place, New York, NY

There are various modes of play available through NYC Backgammon.

"CASUAL MATCHES"

Open match play against one and all. Members pair off as desired, pick up a match score sheet, agree on a match length such as 5 or 7 points, complete the match. After each match is completed players may seek other available members for a new match. Some of our members enjoy playing 'heads-up' for money. You can ask around to see who might be interested in this, or the organizers can help direct you.

"CLINIC MATCHES" - Improve your game

Offered at most monthly meetups at Josie Woods; Richard Munitz (https://www.meetup.com/nyc-bg/members/6866536/), organizer, two-time American Backgammon Tour champion, and ranked from 2007-2011 in the top 32 "Giants of Backgammon (http://www.flintbg.com/giants.html)" in the world, will play clinic matches, in which his opponent and spectators will have the invaluable opportunity every step of the way to learn the in-depth strategy and logic behind the game.

"TOURNAMENTS"

January, May and September meetups at Josie Woods Richard Munitz (https://www.meetup.com/nyc-bg/members/6866536/) will typically hold tournaments, registration deadline 6:45pm, with play starting promptly at 7:00. The tournament is typically single elimination, with match lengths chosen so that the final match will be completed by 10:30. Participation is optional, you may attend for casual match play with players not involved in the tournament if you bring your own board; all our group's backgammon boards will be in use for the tournament. Tournament meetups will not include the clinic matches.

"CHOUETTES"

During regular meetups, 3-5 Player Chouettes may form at-will for stakes the group is comfortable with (Ranging from $0.25 to $5 or $10 per point) This is a fun and exciting variation of backgammon in group format, with a more social element, as well as a great opportunity to learn from other players. Be ready to use the cube.

"BRONX/WESTCHESTER BACKGAMMON"

A monthly Bronx/Westchester meetup hosted by Sharon Torres (https://www.meetup.com/nyc-bg/members/10570788/profile/).

"OTHER LOCATIONS"

Members living outside of Manhattan may volunteer to become event hosts for regular smaller backgammon meetups convenient to those in their area. Other members wishing to host in their own area are welcome to contact the organizers to volunteer to become an event host. Please bring a board if you have one, though if you don't, we do have a few extra boards available. Please be considerate and mindful that we are spending hours in the great space that Josie Woods reserves for us, as well as the generous game and supply storage for the extra boards that our group uses.
