The workshops include of a prior presentation of the topic by myself on YouTube. The meeting itself consists of a brief review of the topic followed by questions and discussion. The weekly topic is posted a week before the event, together with a suggested reading from my work The Pursuit of Value, available through Amazon Books or myself. Transcripts of the Youtube presentation are available by email.

THIS WEEK: Paul Ricoeur states that the “cogito ergo sum” enjoys “a presumed certainty” which on examination “can be deceived about itself”. How can the most well known and indubitable tenet of philosophy be in question? It can be questioned because the phenomenon of consciousness is a product of evolution, plausibly liable to regression, the idea of ‘the self’ is a social construct, and the concept of consciousness is a recent historical construct. Reflective consciousness is also immersed in itself and is subject to a non-referential awareness of itself. Are we thereby continuing to overlook the most fundamental aspect of philosophy and of our lives? Reading: The Pursuit of Value, Ch. 1, Scn. iii.
