Raising the Water Turkey (Birds of Lake Merritt)

This will be an basic introduction to the common and resident birds of Lake Merritt. We will look at the basic identification, biology and behavior of birds. And as a bonus we will examine the breeding behavior of the Water Turkey, or Double-crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum). They are nesting right now and by the time of our event, we may be able to see some freshly hatched baby chicks!
We'll also learn a little about the history of Lake Merritt and what made it the Oldest Wildlife Refuge in the United States!
Where: we will meet down by the large boulders behind the Junior Center for Art and Science, and next to the parking lot where folks rollerblade and skateboard.
When: 8am -9:30am
What to bring: This will be an easy walking tour of about 1 mile so,

  1. a good pair of walking shoes
  2. maybe a light jacket for the early morning chill
  3. A pair of binoculars if you have them. I will bring a few extra pairs to loan
  4. Resuable water bottle
  5. a positive and curious attitude. Positive people make the best experiences
