What we're about

We are a group of UX designers, developers, information architects, content strategists, and design leaders who love to geek out about OOUX and its surrounding topics.

New to OOUX? Come on in! We are excited to have you. 🥂

Been practicing OOUX for years? Awesome. We will be exploring new ideas and trading notes on what works. Do you have a great case study or a new angle? We'd love to have you as a member and a speaker, too! 🥂

OOUX meetups start with a few brief rounds of networking and then we have a speaker and a discussion. Our speakers are Certified OOUX Strategists or industry thought leaders that OOUXers can learn from.

Come prepared with your notepad and beverage of choice—whether that's whiskey or la croix, red wine or green tea.

OOUX is a philosophy for designing digital systems that respects the fact that people think in objects and need consistent, recognizable objects to understand an environment or product. It's not just developers that think OO. Our users do, too—and so should designers!

OOUXers deliberately align their software to their user’s real-world mental model of concrete, defined objects. We try to design our abstract digital worlds to be naturally intuitive as the physical world.

Objects, Information, and Meaning with Marsha Haverty

Online event

At the 2015 IA Summit, I (your organizer, Sophia) had a front row seat to Marsha Haverty's mindblowing lecture, "What we Mean by Meaning." The talk received a standing ovation — it was such a hit that the conference organizers asked Marsha to repeat her talk later in the conference for any one who had missed it.
Here are the slides from that talk: https://www.slideshare.net/mjane_h/what-we-mean-by-meaning-new-structural-properties-of-information-architecture-ias15-47485499

Marsha returned to the IA Summit stage in 2017 to deliver another talk that gave some of the greatest minds in information architecture more juicy food for thought. I missed this talk, "Acting Naturally with Information," but I watched the recording after Andrew Hinton recommended it (thanks, Andrew!). Here's the recording of that talk:

Again, mind: blown.

Currently, Marsha Haverty is at Autodesk, leading the experience design architecture team for 3D product design and manufacturing.

The team is wrangling constantly increasing complexity — and they are leveraging Object-Oriented UX to help do it. At the end of 2021, Marsha and six other experience architects embarked on the OOUX Masterclass (OOUX.com/masterclass) to help mechanical engineers, CAD managers, and related roles focus on bringing their products into the world, instead of spending time doing things like managing files and versions of files — and files within files...and files that don't play nice with other files.

In this talk, Marsha will show us OOUX through her expert eyes. Check back for more details on her talk as we get closer to Feb 3rd!
