"What does water look like? What is its shape? How can you draw it?"

Olivia Vane, Observable Ambassador & Research Software Engineer at the British Library and The Alan Turing Institute, explored these questions through data, code & visualization in a beautiful collection of 4 notebooks about drawing and animating 'waterlines'—an old technique for showing water in maps—in JavaScript. https://observablehq.com/collection/@oliviafvane/watermarks

In this live code walkthrough & discussion with members of the Observable team & community, Olivia will share learnings from her journey creating some historical/viz mash-ups, making some fun images, thinking about graphics and abstraction, and getting inspired by historical materials.

We'll be learning how Olivia created these beautiful maps using Turf.js to create buffer paths in a web worker (and introducing what this means), overlaying historical imagery from map tiles with waterlines drawn in JS, D3 path transitions + SVG morphing, and creating animation frames using Canvas.
