Sunday Evening Surf Session for Beginners in Waikiki (meet @ Duke Statue)
Details
Aloha! Come wrap up your weekend with the South Shore Surf Club! We get together every other Sunday to catch some waves, enjoy the Waikiki sunset, and hang out.
Whether you're looking for a new surf crew or want to get in the water more often, this is the perfect relaxed environment to do it.
📅 The Plan
- When: Sunday Evenings (Biweekly). Please double-check the specific date on this event page!
- Meet: 4:00 PM @ The Duke Kahanamoku Statue (Next to the Waikiki police station). Look for the group with boards!
- Paddle Out: 4:15 PM heading to Waikiki Canoes.
- Pau Hana: After the surf (around sunset), we often head to Shorefyre [ https://share.google/jPmowKvu4R1LWW62l ] for pupus and drinks if the group is feeling it.
🏄 Who is this for? (Level 1 Surfers) We follow Surf Simply's "Tree of Knowledge" [https://surfsimply.com/magazine/the-tree-of-knowledge] definitions to keep everyone safe. This meetup is suitable for Level 1 Surfers.
What is a Level 1 Surfer?
- You are comfortable in the whitewater.
- You are working on selecting and catching waves unassisted.
- You are learning the functional stance and basic board control (stalling and accelerating).
- Note: You do not need to be ripping green waves yet, but you should be able to manage your own board in the foam and impact zone.
🌊 Safety & Conditions
- The Break: Canoes is a popular, crowded break with catamarans and outriggers.
- Stay Aware: We look out for each other, but you need to be alert. If a large canoe, catamaran or larger set of waves is coming, please paddle out of the way (don't be a deer in the headlights!).
- Swimming: You must be a confident swimmer [https://www.stepintoswim.org/news-resources/step-into-swim-blog/confident-swimmer/] capable of paddling about 850ft (250m) through the impact zone multiple times.
🎒 What to Bring
- A Board and leash: Please bring your own or rent one nearby.
- Recommendation: A 9ft–12ft foamie/longboard is the safe and fun choice for these waves.
- Rentals: Grab a board before meeting us at 4:00! We recommend:
- Moku Hawaii [https://www.mokuhawaii.surf/]
- Kahu Surf Co. [[https://www.kahusurfco.com/](https://www.google.com/search?q=https://www.kahusurfco.com/)]
- Big Wave Dave [https://www.bigwavedave.com/]
- Sun protection: Rashguard and reef-safe sunscreen.
📍 Late Arrivals: If you miss us at the statue, no worries! Walk down the beach to Lifeguard Shack 2D, paddle straight out, and you'll find us in the lineup.
🚗 Parking in Waikiki is tough. We recommend the Honolulu Zoo Parking Lot[[https://www.honoluluzoo.org/visit/parking/](https://www.google.com/search?q=https://www.honoluluzoo.org/visit/parking/)]. It's a short walk to the Duke Statue from there.
🤙 More Than Just Surfing South Shore Surf Club [https://www.meetup.com/southshoresurfclub/] is about community. We also organise:
- 🛹 Weekly Skate Nights
- 🧘 Yoga & Beach Days
- 📚 Monthly Surf Book Club
- 🎉 Game Nights
Join the Chat: We use WhatsApp to coordinate rides, find each other on the beach, and chat during the week. Ask Dævo for the link when you arrive!
Note: This is a free community meetup, not a paid lesson. If you are brand new (Level 0) and need guidance, we recommend getting a lesson from a local instructor first! Check out:
