Details

In this months meetup we will be learning about 2 interesting subjects I will update details early next week:

1st is about the power of web sockets:

LabVIEW is a graphical dataflow programming environment from National Instruments Corp. (NI). The relative ease with which complex software can be developed using graphical programming techniques, combined with the hardware devices offered by NI and others, has made LabVIEW a popular programming tool with scientists and engineers for decades. Typical applications for LabVIEW are data acquisition and control systems for manufacturing and laboratory testing.

The LabSocket system, developed by Bergmans Mechatronics LLC (BML), enables remote access to LabVIEW applications using desktop or mobile web browsers. The system operates in two stages: First it automatically creates HTML and JS web browser client code; then, the system dynamically synchronizes the LabVIEW user interface with the browser client through an HTML5 WebSocket interface.

Just as LabVIEW has enabled non-expert programmers to create sophisticated applications for science and engineering purposes, the combination of LabVIEW and LabSocket could also permit non-expert web developers to readily create dynamic web applications. This presentation provides an overview of the system theory of operation, several existing applications for the system, and live demonstrations.

Additional information about LabSocket is available at http://labsocket.com (http://labsocket.com/). The following article provides additional information about the use of the LabSocket system as a web-authoring tool: http://labsocket.com/engineer_crunch_solution.html

About John Bergmans

Mr. John Bergmans, Principal Engineer and owner of Bergmans Mechatronics LLC since 2003, has developed control and data acquisition systems for rocket and oxy-fuel combustion system test stands, and instrumentation and automatic test equipment applications, typically using LabVIEW. In addition to the LabSocket system, Mr. Bergmans has also developed a number of browser-based applications that demonstrate the capability of the WebSocket interface, including the collectdVIewer remote server monitoring system: http://collectdviewer.com (http://collectdviewer.com/).

2nd is GMO's

Anyone who lives in California is familiar with the taboo term “GMO” but does that mean that we really know what they are? Find out in next month’s Meetup on Thursday, April 3rd, when biologist and earth scientist Andrea Kuipers shares the truth about GMO’s from a scientific standpoint.

As Americans, 80% of our food is made with Genetically Modified Organisms so come learn exactly what goes into your food and how just by rearranging nature’s code, we can do amazing things like reduce the price of food, protect our ecosystem, and help end world hunger. Learn why certain groups are afraid of them, why they have become so taboo, and why you, now as informed consumer and hacker (after attending this meeting) should embrace them just as you have embraced binary code.

Andrea Kuipers will also be presenting on the bio-hacking movement and how and why it has become popular in recent years.

Not only is Andrea Kuipers a scientist, but she is also a writer, teacher, speaker, and advocate for S.T.E.M. education. For a preview presentation, check out her article on QGITS (http://www.ochackerz.com/april-2014-meetup-gmos-bio-hacking-for-good/www.qgits.org):

Anti-GMO=Anti-Science? (http://www.qgits.org/science/anti-gmoanti-science/)

All you need is a positive mind, the desire to challenge the status quo and willpower. If you have an internet device or any other technology you wish to share with the group, feel free to bring it, although we can use the equipment at the store.

Apologies in advance as we will have to cap this group at 30 due to the space we have available. To be fair RSVP will be on first come first serve basis. Please keep your RSVP current so others that maybe on the waiting list can still make it. Thanks

Anil
