The story follows the typical arc of a cross-cultural romance, but as it does so it winds through a mystical labyrinth. The title character is a woman who was abducted years ago by bandits that attacked her village in India. When she escaped, she found her way to a wise woman who taught her the magic of spices. In the present, she operates a spice shop in San Francisco where the spices themselves enforce strict rules of conduct: the woman must never leave the shop, never use the magic to satisfy her own desires, and never make contact with another person’s skin. It’s a practice that provides amazing benefits for her customers until a handsome man, not of Indian descent, appears at her door.
