Details

The story is a variation on the legend of a monster created to defend the Jewish people. In this version, set in Lithuania during the Black Plague, the Jews of a remote village are blamed for the plague (a nonsensical excuse for persecution that has actually been used in centuries past). A woman defies her elders and breaks many taboos to raise a golem when her village is threatened with destruction. The resulting creature looks nothing like the one in the famous 1920 film with the same title, but there’s no doubting its power. As in all tellings of this ancient tale, while summoning the golem seems like a good idea at first, it eventually becomes a horror that must be stopped.
