Make colorful clothing & more with tie-dye!

What is tie-dye?

Tie-dye is a fiber art where you make awesome colorful patterns! You fold/twist/pleat/crumple fabric, tie it in place using string or rubber bands, then squirt dye on it.

You can go for classic patterns like spirals or stripes, or go nuts and make a kaleidoscopic nebula. You can also make lovely gradient-ish colors by adding dye and letting gravity pull it down.

What do I need to bring?

Everything is provided except the stuff to dye :) Here are some ideas for fun items to dye: shirts, pants, socks, towels, bags, hats, masks, aprons, sheets, pillowcases, etc...

The type of fabric matters a lot:

• This dye only works on plant fibers. Here are some fabrics made of plant fiber: cotton, linen, canvas, hemp, jute, ramie, Tencel, bamboo, sisal, rayon, cane, rattan.
• Synthetic fibers do not work at all! Here are some fabrics made of synthetic fibers: polyester, nylon, viscose, acrylic, Spandex, Lycra, elastane, Kevlar, Gore-Tex.
• Animal (protein) fibers sort of work but the color gets shifted and it doesn't stick as well. Fabrics made of protein fibers are wool and silk.

For best results, drop off your items at my house before the event and I'll pre-wash them with a special detergent to remove oils, waxes, starches and sizing. This step gives maximum dye adhesion and more even colors.

You can bring as much stuff as you want. If you're bringing any single item that's really big please let me know in advance.

When can I see the stuff I make?

You have to wait at least 24 hours after the event! The longer you wait, the more dye gets bonded to the fabric.

What's provided at the event?

• Dye! We'll use fiber-reactive dye, aka Procion MX dye. This stuff rules because it makes brilliant colors which are extremely permanent. It will not fade and withstands bleaching!
• A little class at the beginning about how to do tie-dye.
• Dispensing tools - mostly squeeze bottles but there will also be spray bottles, paintbrushes, etc.
• Aprons, but you should also wear clothes that you don't mind getting messy!
• Some old white T-shirts, some with art prints, which you can use for dyeing.
• A few chemicals (beyond the dye) needed for doing tie-dye.

We need the payments in advance to hold this event. This serves to:
• Confirm your RSVP and attendance
• Provide the organizers with funding in advance to hold the event, instead of the organizers risking their personal money out-of-pocket.

If we have not received your payment within 24 hours of your RSVP, your RSVP may be removed. If this happens, you can RSVP again if there’s room and send your payment then.
