Outdoor Enthusiasts: Capitol Forest | Sherman Creek Loop
Falls Creek Trailhead (Capitol State Forest), Capitol State Forest, Olympia, WA, USDetails:
This is one of the longest hike options in Capitol State Forest -- weaving through wooded valleys and along quietly flowing creeks, visitors here may discover not only natural wonders but also relics from the time that this area was the home of many a logging show.Distance:
7.8 miles R/T*, this trail is a loop*Note* For our first hike on this trail, if desired, we can split into smaller groups of those who would like to do a partial hike vs those who would like to complete the whole loop. Just want to make this hike accessible to all fitness levels as, let’s be honest, 7.8 miles does sound a bit daunting! So totally cool if you want to get your nature on, but cap the adventure at 2, 3, 4 miles total :)
Getting Started:
We'll meet at the Fall Creek trailhead parking lot and wait for 15-minutes. At 1:15pm we'll start the trail which begins with crossing the creek and then continues a quarter mile or so before splitting. To follow Sherman Creek, we'll turn right at the junction and follow the trail around a small ridge to where Sherman and Lost Valley Creeks meet. As we round the bend, the trail splits. Both sides keep us on the Lost Creek Trail, but the one on the right will take us along a road for a brief stretch.Continue straight past the road and follow Lost Valley Creek to the junction with the Mima Falls West trail right at the beginning of the creek. Then hang a left and the trail climbs slowly, passing a fragrant field of skunk cabbage as well as towering fir trees. Continue climbing, and cross a logging road, then enter a mature second-growth forest, the result of replanting from the visitors who were here in their log trucks years ago. The trail takes us up and down for 2.1 miles until you reach the trailhead again.
Directions to Fall Creek Trailhead:
From Hwy 101 in Olympia take Black Lake Blvd south, continue on Black Lake Blvd until it turn into 62nd Ave SW and arrives at a T intersection. Make a left at the T and you'll be on Delphi Rd. After a few miles you will make a right on Waddell Creek Rd. After a few more miles Waddell Creek Rd you will come to another T intersection, this time you will be the top of the T and continue straight and the Road will become the Sherman Valley Rd which is also known as the C-Line Rd. From here you will continue up the C-Line until you see the signs and turn off for Fall Creek Campground. Continue downhill and the signs will lead you to the Fall Creek Campground and trail head.Trail FAQs:

Outdoor Enthusiasts: Capitol Forest | Lost Valley or McKenny Trail
Falls Creek Trailhead (Capitol State Forest), Capitol State Forest, Olympia, WA, USContinuing our "tour of the trails" in the Capitol Forest, let's try Lost Valley Loop and/or McKenny Trail.
From the description online, it sounds like they may be connected, so we can do one or both.
Distance:
8.1 miles R/T, this trail is a loopGetting Started:
We'll meet at the Fall Creek trailhead parking lot and wait for 15-minutes. At 1:15pm we'll hit the trail.Trail Route Details:
This loop begins by following the Mima Falls Trail West (Trail No. 8 across for the parking spot) for 0.4 miles down to a junction in Lost Valley Creek.Head right on Trail No. 20. Climbing gradually, pass a few big firs, a lot of skunk cabbage, and an active beaver pond. In 1.4 miles come to a junction with Trail No. 6, the Green Line. Turn left and follow this good trail. Climb a bit more, and after crossing a logging road enter a mature second-growth forest.
Begin a long descent into the Sherman Creek valley. At 2.6 miles emerge from the forest to cross a recent cut. Notice Capitol Peak and Larch Mountain in front of you. At 3.25 miles reach the lovely Sherman Creek valley, where you'll come to another trail junction. Continue to the left.
After about 3 miles of hiking along the creek, you'll come to an old trail junction. The trail now leaves Sherman Creek to follow Lost Valley Creek upstream. This is the best part of the loop. Under a canopy of moss-draped alders and big cedars, the trail uses an old logging railroad bed. After 1 mile of heading up Lost Valley Creek, look for trestle remnants. Look, too, along the creek for relics from the old logging days; broken bricks and porcelain plates litter the area.
