Niacin and the Void: A psychosocial reading of breakfast
Details
What does it mean to be fortified?
Whose anxieties are encoded in the promise of added iron?
And why does riboflavin arrive fourth, never first?
Part 1: Free association
We invite participants to speak freely from whatever arises as we read, slowly and together, the back of a Kellogg's Corn Flakes box.
No expertise required.
Part 2: Papers and panel discussion
This interdisciplinary symposium invites scholars to interrogate the back of the cereal packet as a site of ideological production — a text haunted by nutritional capitalism, suburban dread, and the compulsive fantasy of the complete human. Papers will examine vitamin hierarchies, the semiotics of "natural flavouring", and the politics of the humble small print.
Breakfast, it turns out, was never just breakfast.
Refreshments provided. Cereal not included.
