What we’re about
A growing body of designers, developers and other creatives are finding new analogue and digital approaches to the navigation of ever-increasing complexity. How can we share ideas? What can we learn from each other about the ups and downs, competing approaches, and evolving terminology of our field?
At these meetups we will loosely explore themes sitting in the overlap between data and design: data visualization, storytelling, information design, visual analysis, data science, infographics and more. We will exchange insights into our working practices, tools and cultures. (scrum, human-centred design, design thinking, service design and more)
Each meetup will feature two guest speakers, presenting practical reports from their projects, other cool insights and inspiration. Of course, drinks and snacks will be provided by our partners.
There are regular meetups in Switzerland, Austria and the US to boost this exchange! Find out more on www.ondataanddesign.com
Join us! Talks and other resources will be recorded and made available also offline to members.
We hope to see you soon!

See all- Responsible Design · On Data And Design #27 · on May 22Link visible for attendees
Each designer is driven by unique motivations and visions when creating information design and data visualization, and responsibility plays an important role. What ethical considerations need to go into their creations to ensure their work acts as a force for good and behavior change? Where is the untapped potential for designers? As agents of change, designers have the opportunity to redefine ecosystems, influence global narratives and shape the socio-ecological landscape.
Today we will explore what drives our speakers to innovate and push the boundaries of traditional data visualization. Alongside ethical questions on overarching considerations, we will also explore how photography, illustration and code, when paired with data, can enhance narrative and emotional impact.
IMPORTANT: Please register for the event, so that we can send you the online link before the event.
Darjan Hil from Superdot.studio (https://www.superdot.studio/darjan-hil-en) will host the next session in English only on YouTubeLive. You will be able to ask questions via Slido.
The speakers are:
Gabrielle Merite (https://www.gabriellemerite.com/), an information designer renowned for integrating ethical practices with compelling data visualization to elevate brand identities, will share insights from her experience with clients and the responsible use of data visualization in maintaining consistency and efficiency across platforms. We are eager to learn how Gabrielle uses photography and illustrations to create emotional moments in combination with data.
Reg Abos (https://www.studioregina.work/), a designer, educator and researcher from Melbourne, will present her ongoing doctoral research on how playful representations of data can facilitate behavior change. She will discuss how using interactive, tactile, and sensory materials in design can lead to sustainable consumer behaviors. We are intrigued to see how responsible design practice through visualizations can impact our daily habits and contribute to environmental regeneration.
Cathryn Ploehn (https://cathrynploehn.com/feraldataviz/), a designer in the field of data visualization, will discuss her approach titled "Feral Data Visualization Manifesto." Her work uses techniques like botanical simulation (l-systems,cellular automata, space colonization), she transforms traditional data visualization into new, botanical forms. Cathryn will show her research projects and her approach of responsible design which opens new pathways for understanding and interacting with the data around us.
