This hands-on workshop connects community gardening with biotechnology to uncover the microbes driving compost and soil health.

## Microbes & Compost: The hidden helpers of gardens hosted by The Open Science Network Society & Riley Park Community Garden

Join us in person to discover the amazing world of microbes and compost, the true superstars behind thriving gardens!

This hands-on workshop connects community gardening with biotechnology to uncover the microbes driving compost and soil health.

Using real compost samples, you’ll learn how scientists identify bacteria, fungi, plant matter, and other life using DNA barcoding techniques.

What you’ll gain:

  • Understand how microbes power composting
  • Learn basic DNA and soil microbiome science
  • Get hands-on experience with real lab tools including pipettes, mini centrifuge, PCR machine and gel electrophoresis

Healthy soil supports sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, and stronger local food systems!

Open to ages 10+
No lab experience required
