OpenData & IoT Meetup

OpenData & IoT Meetup is an Adelaide community for people interested in how sensors, connected devices and data can be used to understand and solve real-world problems.

The group began in 2016 through the Growing Data Foundation, initially bringing people together around the Adelaide node of The Things Network, LoRaWAN and the emerging opportunity for open IoT networks and shared data.
A lot has changed in ten years — and some of the fundamental challenges haven't.

Sensors are cheaper and smarter. Connectivity options have expanded. Cloud platforms, edge computing, AI, robotics and satellite technologies have changed what is possible. But we are still working through many of the same questions: how do we collect useful data from the physical world, move it reliably, make sense of it, share it appropriately, and turn it into something genuinely useful?
That's what this community is about.
Topics may include:

• Open data, data sharing and interoperability
• LoRaWAN and other wireless and communications technologies
• Edge computing and embedded systems
• Analytics, AI and machine learning applied to real-world data
• Open source hardware and software

• Energy, infrastructure and transport
• Advanced manufacturing, automation and robotics

Everyone is welcome.
The community brings together developers, engineers, makers, researchers, students, founders, businesses, government, academics and anyone else interested in learning, experimenting or sharing what they are working on.

Our events will focus on practical projects, demonstrations, lessons learned, emerging technologies and genuine discussion. Commercial organisations and technology providers are welcome, but the emphasis is on sharing useful knowledge and experience rather than sales pitches.

After a quieter period, OpenData & IoT Meetup is being refreshed in 2026. We'll be running our own events again as well as collaborating with other South Australian technology and industry communities where there is useful crossover.
