We’re excited to announce the first-ever OpenSearch Project Meetup in Namma Chennai! 🎉

Join us for an engaging session where we’ll dive deep into the world of search, observability, security and AI Agents — and discover how OpenSearch is powering modern applications.

Whether you’re a developer, student, or tech enthusiast, this meetup is a great chance to learn, connect, and exchange ideas.

📢 Agenda & Speakers:

1. Vector DB 101 With Open Search

Speaker: Ram Iyengar - Chief Evangelist at Cloud Foundry Foundation

Building AI-powered applications requires more than just a model; it requires a robust retrieval strategy. This talk dives into OpenSearch’s native vector search capabilities, showing you how to turn a standard search engine into a powerful Vector Database.

We will cut through the noise and focus on implementation: how to generate, store, and retrieve vector embeddings right alongside your existing dataset. Whether you are building a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) chatbot, a semantic search engine, or a recommendation algorithm, you will leave this session understanding how to use OpenSearch to deploy efficient, scalable AI solutions without managing a new piece of infrastructure.

2. RAG in Action: Building Smarter AI Systems with OpenSearch

Speaker: Madhavan Kidambi - Software Architect, IBM

A hands-on look at building production-ready RAG pipelines with OpenSearch. We’ll cover hybrid retrieval (BM25 + vector), metadata-aware search, relevance tuning, and end-to-end observability. See how OpenSearch solves many limitations of standalone vector databases and why it’s an ideal foundation for real-world RAG applications.

3. From AWS Elasticsearch to AWS OpenSearch — A Real-World Journey of Scaling, Sharding, Stability and Cost Optimization

Speaker: ManojKumar G and Ragavendra Vigneshwaran, Site Reliability Engineering Professional, IBM

1. Business Case & Migration Strategy: Inevitable shift from Elasticsearch 7.10 to OpenSearch 2.15 to avoid end-of-support risks, phase-wise zero-downtime upgrades (inline, blue-green, parallel, snapshot+inline) across environments.

2. Achieving SLA & Cost Goals: Maintained zero downtime and SLA during migration; optimised costs via shard reallocation, node reduction, and static index templates.

3. OpenSearch Storage & Performance Tuning: Migrated ILM to ISM with size/age-based rollover policies; resolved Fluentd backpressure data loss via S3 → SQS → Vector.dev buffer, enabling zero log loss and further node consolidation.

4. Serverless Adoption: Introduced AWS OpenSearch Serverless with blue-green deployment for additional cost optimization and scalability.
