Search relevance in OpenSearch is powered by a combination of fundamental ranking algorithms—such as BM25 and semantic scoring—and the ability to evaluate how well results satisfy user needs. In this session, we’ll start by unpacking the building blocks of OpenSearch relevance and how queries are scored. From there, we’ll introduce two powerful features designed to bring relevance measurement and tuning into a continuous cycle: User Behavior Insights and the Search Quality Workbench.
UBI captures how users interact with search results—clicks, impressions, filters, and conversions—turning behavior into meaningful signals.
The Workbench complements this by offering a framework to measure relevance through offline metrics like NDCG and online insights from UBI.
Together, these tools enable search practitioners, product managers, and developers to close the loop between intent, search performance, and business outcomes—driving data-driven improvements, personalization, and impact across OpenSearch-powered applications.
