PHP in the AI Era: PHP 8.6, MCP and the Engine Behind WordPress & Drupal
PHP quietly powers WordPress, Drupal, Laravel and most of the web, and every year it ships a new release that makes it even better. 2026 has been one of its best years yet, and it turns out PHP is in a great position for the AI era. Let’s talk about why!

PHP 8.6 is (almost) here. The annual release lands November 19, and it’s a good one. Partial function application lets you prefill arguments with a simple `?` placeholder (goodbye, wrapper closures), and there’s a built-in `clamp()`, a new `Time\Duration` class with nanosecond precision, a `SortDirection` enum, and default values for readonly properties. Under the hood, a new polling API gives PHP one interface to epoll, kqueue and friends. Even the session defaults got safer out of the box. Some of it you’ll use every day, and some of it is just plain fun to dig into.

PHP is officially an AI language. The official PHP SDK for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a collaboration between the PHP Foundation, Anthropic’s MCP team, and Symfony, so you can now expose your PHP app’s tools and data to Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI agents with a Composer install. Better yet, the newest MCP spec went stateless, which happens to be exactly how PHP has always handled requests. (Fun fact: one of MCP’s co-creators was a PHP 5.4 and 5.5 release manager. PHP people get around!)

Laravel went all in. Laravel now has three official AI packages: the AI SDK for building AI features into your app, Boost for helping coding agents write better Laravel code, and Laravel MCP for letting AI tools talk to your app. We’ll look at what each one does and when you’d actually use it.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • PHP 8.6 deep dive: partial function application, the new polling API, `Time\Duration` and more, with real before-and-after code.
  • Building an MCP server in PHP, live, in a few minutes (the same approach works for WordPress and Drupal).
  • Coding with AI agents in a Laravel project: what works, what doesn’t, and what’s surprisingly good.
  • Open discussion: how are you using AI in your PHP work? Bring your wins, your fails, and your questions.

Whether you’ve been writing PHP since the 3.x days, you follow every RFC, you build WordPress themes and plugins, you maintain a Drupal site, or you just inherited your first Laravel app, there’s something here for you.
