Background: This past fall a few skilled OSM-ers in the Denver community worked with the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) to prepare an import of Planimetrics building footprints, professionally created from 3” imagery. The goal is to import the over one million buildings in the 9-county metro area of Denver by an organized team of OSMers committed to tackling the project to contribute and validate a series of small bulk uploads. This is where you come in... we want you to be on this team.
All mappers are welcome, no matter how much, or little, time you have to help; each batch should take 30 minutes or less. However, the workflow for the import requires some familiarity with the JOSM editor. There are plenty of resources to get you started beforehand; such as http://LearnOSM.org
For the import itself, you will want to familiarize yourself with:
- The wiki-page about the import: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Denver_Planimetrics_Import
- Especially helpful is to read through the Workflow document: https://github.com/geochasm/DRCOG_Buildings - this is still a bit of work in progress, so we'll go through it once or twice together at the beginning of the mapathon.
Most important! Community practice (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Guidelines) is to use an OSM account designated for imports; this also helps us track progress, users, etc. as well as make sure you have access to the projects. Follow the instructions in the workflow above. Doing so ahead of time will help us get going quicker with the walk-through.
If you come late, no worries, we'll all be helping each other in these mapathons anyway so better explanations might evolve as it gets later.
Don't forget to bring: Laptop with working and updated JOSM editor and a mouse is highly recommended.
