About us
What to Expect:
Welcome to Off The Beaten Trail Hiking Group!
Our hiking group hikes many of the popular trails in Nassau and Western Suffolk. However, I will put an emphasis on finding lesser known paths and trails that are hidden or less traveled. Don't worry, we rarely go into the brush, but we definitely try to avoid the beaten path whenever possible. Most hiking distances will be between 3 and 8 miles.
We may occasionally schedule a not-too-far upstate hike as well.
Participant Dues: Every 6 months we require any member attending an event to pay a one time $5.00 fee to cover event organizing and planning as well as Meetup's admin fees.
Who can and should join:
All ages are welcome. Hiking shoes with good treads are highly recommended. Although most trails are not too challenging, some trails can be hilly and somewhat steep so being physically fit will be to your advantage. For Spring, Summer and Fall hikes I recommend bringing water(especially when it's warm), a snack and to douse any exposed skin with bug spray.
Benefits:
Meeting fellow hiking enthusiasts, having good conversations, making new friends, exploring dozens of great Long Island trails, and getting healthy exercise.
Thank you for joining our group. I look forward to seeing you on the trail.
Best Wishes,

Saucy's Gone But Not Forgotten Trail - 4 mile moderate Kings Park hike
Saucy's Gone But Not Forgotten Trail, West Main Street,, Kings Park, NY, USParking Location: Just north of Country Lane Dr. near 139 West Main Street, Kings Park.
This link will take you directly there.https://www.google.com/maps?q=40.8932248,-73.2626121
To the best of my knowledge, this is an unnamed park and trail. So I've taken it upon myself to name it after my long time canine hiking buddy, Saucy, who passed away on July 24th, 2024. Some of you knew her. She was the best! Whether alone with me or with the group, she followed along, never ran off and never complained or made a fuss. Although I have a new hiking partner, Roxy, Saucy will always hold a special place in my heart. She's gone, but not forgotten and I miss her every day. ๐ข
Parking will be on the east side of West Main Street(25a) just north of Country Lane Drive where you can also park if we get a big turnout.
When you arrive, look for Greg. I'll be holding my sign-in clipboard standing near my big red GMC Denali pickup truck.
SUGGESTIONS: For this hike, I recommend shorts, leggings or long pants and shoes with good treads, water to keep you hydrated and, if you like, a snack to keep you energized. This trail has some reasonably steep declines and inclines so be prepared to get a workout.
ALERT! Since the weather is heating up and it's officially bug season, insect repellent is recommended and it's a good idea to check yourself for ticks at the end of the hike before you get into your vehicle or after you get home.
REMINDER: New attendees to my Spring thru Summer hiking season are required to pay a $5.00 semi-annual fee to cover my planning, preparation and Meetup.com's exorbitant fees. This fee will cover you for all future hikes through August 2025.
Generous donations are also greatly appreciated. Please, IF YOU RSVP, DON'T BE A NO SHOW!
If you can't make it last minute, please cancel your RSVP. If you get lost call me for directions. If you're running late, call me with your ETA. If you have any other questions, comments or suggestions, feel free to contact me anytime, Greg, at 631-275-0512Thank you for being a member.
