This event is celebrating my 66th birthday which is on the 16th as well as my record setting 167th consecutive day of walking over 10,000 steps. Just for the record, so far I've averaged over 13,000 steps per day for the entire year. (humble brag ๐Ÿ˜)

DESCRIPTION:

This is an easy to moderate 6.5 mile loop trail hike around the Stump Pond at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown.

We will be hiking through the woods over winding trails that can often be "rooty" and occasionally hilly, so hiking shoes with good treads are recommended. We will traverse bridges and boardwalks, pass by running streams and take in some interesting points of interest.

Unfortunately, as we traverse the trail and look through all the beauty of the summertime foliage, we will see the sad devastation of the once beautiful Stump Pond. On August 18, 2024, after nearly 10 inches of torrential downpours, the dam burst and collapsed, emptying millions of gallons of water into the Nissequogue River. This catastrophe left the pond almost completely empty. This was a true environmental disaster. and now as you will see, the lake bed has got completely overgrown with foliage. Supposedly, millions of dollars have been allocated by Suffolk County to rebuild the dam and refill the pond sometime in the next year or so. We'll see.
