Container Image Buildpacks & Spring Boot 3 Migration, worth it?

Details

You are cordially invited to a special Meetup event hosted by the Ottawa JUG in collaboration with the Montreal JUG. We are thrilled to announce that this event marks the return of our in-person gatherings after more than 5 years!

Join us for an evening of insightful talks and networking opportunities. We have the pleasure of hosting two esteemed speakers from the Montreal JUG, Anthony Dahanne and Xavier Bouclet.

This event presents an exceptional opportunity to connect with fellow Java enthusiasts, expand your network, and engage in meaningful discussions about the latest advancements in development and deployment of Spring Boot applications.

Don't miss out on this long-awaited gathering of the Ottawa Java community. We look forward to seeing you there!

Should you migrate to Spring Boot 3?
8 years after the first release of Spring Boot, it was time for an update. Spring Boot 3, released in 2022, is the new version of the most widely used Java framework. What does version 3 bring? Is Spring Boot's response up to par with competitors Quarkus and Micronaut? We will see in this presentation.

About Xavier: As a Techlead for several years, I enjoy discussing everything related to languages, tools, or development practices. I am one of the organizers of the Java User Group and the Devoxx4kids in Montreal. I participate in meetups and conferences to learn and challenge my knowledge. I have also written a book about the Techlead job.

Buildpacks: the other way to build container images
Buildpacks have been around for more than 10 years! First they were used to detect and build an app before deploying it to a couple of PaaS. Then we could create Docker (OCI) images with them. Are they a good alternative to the Dockerfile? Who's supporting them and how? Come and find out during this session that will feature demos along the way!

About Anthony: Software Developer for 15+ years, my favorite topics are containerization (Docker and Kubernetes), building tools, Continuous Integration and, of course, core Java development. Having recently joined VMware, I work on CNCF, Tanzu and Cloudfoundry Java buildpacks. In my spare time, I work on various open source projects : from Twitter bots written in NodeJS or Go, to Android apps !

Schedule
The doors open at 6:30 PM to allow people to arrive and have a bit of networking time. The first talk will commence at 7 PM.

Your presence matters! Join us in large numbers to make this event a resounding success, sending a powerful signal to attract future speakers.

This meetup is sponsored by Spiria, who is graciously providing us with a spectacular venue to host our event!

Founded in 2003, Spiria is a software engineering firm focused on helping organizations modernize their applications, execute digital transformation projects and increase their teams’ velocity through co-development.
