IN SEARCH OF... The Lost Trail - Lehigh Gap - East Side 8-10 miles & 1400-1600ft
Details
We'll have fun getting a good workout while adding a bonus search to our Hike.
Please read the full description so you know what you are signing up for.
Meet 9:15 or earlier and be ready to Hike by 9:30. Note: there are no restrooms at the parking lot but are several minimarkets within several miles of our meeting spot via most arrival routes. Plan Accordingly!
Some years ago the Appalacian Trail was rerouted to the south side of the mountain. Our goal is to find the old trail.
We'll head north on the AT, do a rock scramble, have awesome views looking down into the Gap and search for the lost trail, which if we find, affords excellent views north into the Poconos.
We'll take our time on the rock scramble since some of the boulders are 2 to 3+ feet high and require using hands and feet (Four Wheel Drive Mode). While the boulder section is relatively short, it will take about 15 minutes to traverse. This is where we'll work together to help each other get over the rocks. Going up is easier than going down, so we'll take the Winter Trail coming back down which switchbacks to make the descent less steep.
- Note: With the steep climb, rock scramble, 8-10 miles and 1400-1600ft of elevation, this is NOT A BEGINNER HIKE. While the pace is moderate and there will be some breaks, the terrain is advanced. The trail, typical for the AT in PA is very rocky with steep uphill and downhill sections with some gnarled tree roots.
While moving we will be going quick (3 mph on flat & 2.5 mph on uphills and downhills). We will go slower on the boulders!
We will stop for a snack break and to take in some of the scenery which should be very nice as fall colors should be quite prevalent. If we're ahead of schedule when we reach the bottom, we'll follow the old railroad grade toward Palmerton for a little additional exploration and an extra mile or two.
Hiking boots or trail runners are best. A hiking stick or two or a solid tree branch is recommended.
Bring at least two bottles of water, a snack and electrolyte/energy chews, etc. as you deem necessary as we'll be out for three to four hours and will cover 8-10 miles with as much as 1600ft of elevation gain.
