Drogeda a Mystical Tour

Details

Today we meet at Bus station and do a gentle walk of Drogheda , I can transport 3 from the Bus station.
Throughout it's history Drogheda has been a site of military, civil and ecclesiastical importance. While it is generally accepted that the town of Drogheda was established by the Normans, the area around the mouth of the Boyne has a history that stretches back thousands of years. The stones used to build the famous passage graves at Newgrange and Knowth were transported to their present locations byway of the river. St. Patrick also made his way along the river to Slane where he lit the Paschal Fire.
The Bridge ( An Droichead) where we will see was the only bridge stopping English Armies landing always in Carrickfergus attacking Dublin and this Drogheda was always a Battleground from Edward the Bruce to Cromwell.
We walk to Millmount
The mound at Millmount is reputed to be 3,000 years old and local folklore has it that Amegin, the Celtic poet is buried there. When the Normans came to Ireland in the 12th century, Hugh De Lacy, built a defensive Motte and Bailey here, overlooking the mouth of the Boyne.
In 1649 during Oliver Cromwell's attack on the town it is believed that much of the slaughter that took place then happened in Millmount, with up to 2,500 men killed on September 11th 1649. Later the complex served as an army barracks and in 1808 the Martello Tower was built, as a precaution against invasion by the French. The tower was badly damaged during the Irish Civil War in 1922 and was restored to its former glory in 2000. There is a fantastic Museum and Coffee Shop here We will then View Brunells Bridge a remarkable piece of engineering Which was copied to the Bridge on Newcastle Upon Tyne and pass the Barbican Gate , The House of John Phillip Holland the first submarine maker Take a former Christian Brother with a passion for Jules Verne, the Fenian Brotherhood's passion for an independent Ireland, and the US navy's passion for maritime supremacy, and what do you get? The first successful submarine, known as the Fenian Ram . Unfortunately it sank first time in action.
So many other treats in store on this tour but not telling you have to come see yourself
