If you’re drawn to acoustic virtuosity with global influences, our October artist, Hiroya Tsukamoto, offers a unique blend of tradition and innovation.
Hiroya Tsukamoto is an innovative guitarist and composer based in New York, known for blending folk, jazz, and world music into a rich, textural sound. Originally from Kyoto, Japan, Tsukamoto began composing as a child on instruments like the recorder, then switched to the five-string banjo before moving to guitar. His early banjo training influenced his use of fast arpeggios and rhythmic patterns in guitar work. He studied at Berklee College of Music on a scholarship, which broadened his approach to progressive and cross-genre music.
His performances often feature bare-fingered playing with a focus on delicate, fluid fingerpicking, and he uses effects like looping pedals to create layered textures — from shimmering arpeggios to percussive staccato notes.
