Spruce Run Turnpike Night Hike!

Details

This will be a point to point night hike tracing the historic route of the Spruce Run Turnpike, nearly forgotten predecessor to Rt 31 across Warren and Hunterdon Counties. It connected the towns of Oxford Furnace and Clinton.
The route parallels present day Rt 31, but passes through historic settlements dating from late 1700s to mid 1800s. 15 miles.

The hike will be almost all road walking, but most of them are pleasant back roads through historic areas and down towns. The route will include the Shippen Manor, Oxford Furnace (first hot blast furnace in the US), downtown Washington and the Cornish Mansion, New Hampton Historic District, downtown Hampton (formerly "Junction"), Glen Gardner, and Clinton, and the old Red Mill, most photographed historic structure in NJ. Flashlights recommended.

When I first started hiking with my grandfather at the age of three, one of the series of hikes we did was the entire Spruce Run Turnpike. Since then, I have enjoyed hiking it's entire length in a day (or night in this case). With all the snow and ice, it lends itself well to a winter night hike, and we will have usually enough good light to see. Along the way, I will impart area history. Learn how all of the towns got their starts and other historic tidbits.

There are also seasonal views near the beginning, a result of the storms taking off a lot of the slope trees.
