See allThe Outdooraholics Christmas trip is back for the 13th year and this year we're at a new venue, just 2.5 hours drive from West London.
Put on your festive hats as we’re off to the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge. We will eat, drink and make merry with friends and fellow hikers in our last weekend hiking trip before the New Year.
Less formal than usual, our Christmas trips are all about fun, festivity, partying and hiking.
Oh and to add to the fun we're having a fancy dress party on Saturday night. For the Fancy dress we've chosen a theme that can suit any budget - Fantasy and Fiction :-D
Please note, there will be loud music and partying until 11pm. If this does not appeal, then this trip is not for you but we have plenty of non party hiking weekends.
The Mendip hills within Somerset are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Stunning landscapes of steep rocky cliffs are home to the largest and one of the most spectacular natural sights in England - Cheddar Gorge. Situated on the northern edge of the village of Cheddar this dramatic limestone gorge stands at 450ft high and spreads across almost 5km. Formed under the sea 300 million years ago Cheddar Gorge lends its name to many things - cheese, caves, flowers and Britain's oldest complete skeleton buried in Gough’s Cave 9000 years ago.
Many of those who visit the area are unaware of the outstanding diversity of landscape and numerous exciting hiking trails. We will introduce you to the best Cheddar has to offer, therefore we’ve put together a trip combining good doses of both hiking and cultural exploration.
Video of Cheddar Gorge: LINK

• Conquer the three highest peaks in Surrey — Box Hill (224m), Leith Hill (294m) & Holmbury Hill (261m)
• Hike through the Surrey Hills AONB, one of England’s most beautiful landscapes
• Walk through Denbies Wine Estate — the largest vineyard in England
• See the historic Leith Hill Tower with its sweeping panoramas
• A superb training hike for major challenges (Yorkshire Three Peaks, National Three Peaks, Kilimanjaro, Toubkal, Everest Base Camp etc)🥾 Hike Description
This is Outdooraholics’ toughest day hike from London — a formidable challenge often called the Yorkshire cousins as it rivals the Yorkshire Three Peaks in length and ascent. We take on the three highest points in Surrey: Box Hill, Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill, following ancient sandy trails and woodland ridges across the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Surrey is the most wooded county in England, and this route showcases its very best trails.Starting from Holmwood, our route climbs first to Leith Hill (294m), the highest point in the South East of England. Here the summit is crowned by the 18th-century gothic Leith Hill Tower, offering some of the most far-reaching views of any of our hikes — south to the sea and the South Downs, and north as far as central London landmarks on a clear day.
From there, we continue along sandy trails and woodland ridges to Holmbury Hill (261m), where the remains of an Iron Age fort overlook the forested Weald below. Our final peak is the iconic Box Hill (224m), renowned for its chalk slopes, sweeping views over the North Downs, and challenging ascents that make it a classic hiking destination close to London.
The trail also takes us through the Denbies Wine Estate, the largest vineyard in England, before completing our circuit. Due to the length and intensity of the route, we usually do not have time for an end-of-hike pub stop — though if timing allows, we may fit a brief one in.
Toughness (Please Read):
This is a very tough, long, and hilly hike with over 700m of total ascent — comparable to climbing "Mount" Snowdon. Expect steep sections, some loose ground, and a short section where you need to use your hands it's so steep. The pace will average 4.2–4.6 km/h and the hike will not be slowed down or cut short. It is not suitable for beginners or intermediate hikers. Only experienced and fit walkers should join. If a participant is unable to keep pace or complete the hike, there are places they can arrange a taxi to leave the hike. If you have any doubts about your ability, we recommend choosing one of our less demanding hikes instead.

For centuries, the beauty of Box Hill has inspired artists, writers and musicians. Jane Austen set a scene from Emma here, George Lambert painted it in 1733 (now in Tate Britain), and it has even featured in modern songs. The poet Keats and G.K. Chesterton also drew inspiration from these hills, showing how this corner of Surrey has long captured creative imaginations. Our hike begins in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with woodland and rolling trails through Norbury Park before joining the twisting roads used in the 2012 Olympic cycling race. From here, we climb to the summit of Box Hill, where the Salomons Memorial viewpoint offers sweeping panoramas across the Weald and as far as Devil’s Dyke by the South Coast. On the way we also encounter traces of history, including a late 19th-century fort built to defend against French invasion and the semi-ruined folly tower from 1815.
After soaking up the views, we descend to the River Mole and cross its famous Stepping Stones, a much-loved landmark of the area. The trail then continues through open chalk downland and woodland before reaching Denbies Wine Estate, the largest vineyard in England, winner of international awards including Best Rosé in the World at the 2010 International Wine Challenge.
A wonderfully varied hike that blends chalk downs, riverside beauty, iconic views and layers of history — all within easy reach of London.

• Pass Guildford Castle, dating back nearly 1,000 years🥾 Hike Description
This is a shorter and gentler version of our North Downs hikes, ideal for beginners or those who want to enjoy a day outdoors and still return to London by late afternoon. At just 11km, it is the shortest hike Outdooraholics runs — perfect if you want a manageable day of exercise, scenery and socialising, with your evening free to enjoy afterwards. Our hike begins in the historic town of Guildford, whose history stretches back to the Bronze Age and the Norman castle at its heart. Famous past and present residents include Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland; codebreaker Alan Turing; model Jodie Kidd; Monty Python writer Terry Jones; and actress Yvonne Arnaud. The artist William Turner also visited to paint St Catherine’s Chapel in 1807 and 1808, works now displayed in the Tate Gallery.
We start along the River Wey, a peaceful waterway lined with boathouses and willow trees, leading us to the evocative ruins of St Catherine’s Chapel. From here the trail rises gently through woodland, joining the North Downs Way as it follows an ancient ridge with sweeping views across Surrey.
Our finale is at the remote and atmospheric St Martha’s Hill, crowned by its 12th-century church and offering panoramic views across seven counties and almost to the sea. The route then returns us to Guildford, where we pass the Norman castle before concluding our hike in this picture-postcard market town.
