🥾 Hike Description
This hike offers a rich mix of landscapes and history, perfect for beginners and those wanting variety in a day’s walk. We begin with a stretch along the River Arun, before heading into Arundel Park, a landscaped estate of woodland, rolling meadows and Swanbourne Lake, crowned by the striking Hiorne Tower, an extravagant Gothic folly built in 1787 by the Duke of Norfolk. From its commanding hilltop position we enjoy sweeping views across the chalk downs to the distant sea.
Midway, we pause at a traditional riverside pub — a chance for a quick drink in a peaceful setting before continuing on.
From here the trail rejoins the River Arun, where we follow its picturesque bends with ever-closer views of Arundel Castle looming above the town. Founded in 1067 as a Norman motte-and-bailey, the castle has grown into one of England’s grandest stately homes, still inhabited by the Dukes of Norfolk after more than 400 years.
Our finale is in the historic town of Arundel, where the castle dominates the skyline and the French Gothic Arundel Cathedral rises just beyond. After exploring the town, we finish the day with refreshments in Arundel before returning to London — a hike that blends chalk hills, riverside beauty and Sussex heritage.
