** Trip Description**
The Lake District is defined by rugged fells, deep valleys, and reflective lakes, shaped by glaciation and centuries of human use. Over the weekend, we explore this varied terrain on foot, experiencing how dramatically the scenery changes between high mountain ridges, sheltered valleys, and open lakeshores.

Our base is a grand Victorian mansion (1886), set among woodland beside the lake. Its history includes sheltering wartime evacuees and political refugees, and today it provides a memorable and atmospheric base for exploring the surrounding fells.

The walking ranges from demanding mountain terrain to gentler lakeside paths. Time is built in to enjoy the views, recover between days, and make the most of the setting, including evenings spent relaxing by the lake.

Across the three days, the routes balance physical challenge and enjoyment, offering a classic Lake District experience that combines iconic summits, water-level walking, and some of the park’s most recognisable viewpoints.

** Itinerary**

Friday – Arrival
Arrive at our exclusively hired accommodation. Take in the mountain air, settle into your room, and meet your fellow hikers over a relaxed evening. The atmosphere is informal - no rush, just good company and excitement for the days ahead.

Saturday – Causey Pike
• Distance: 13km (8 miles)
• Grading: Tough/Mountain
• Ascent: 720m
• Hiking time: 5 - 6.5 hours

WARNING - this is a TOUGH mountain hike, it is only for very fit and experienced hikers who have hiked mountains before. There is more ascent in this hike than walking up the entire Shard, then doing it again (twice in total). If this is not for you, you are welcome to join the trip and skip the hike and self organise another activity today such as exploring Lake Derwent by boat.

Today we venture into the picturesque Newlands Valley, a landscape immortalized in Beatrix Potter's tales and rich with mining history. We ascend Causey Pike, a fell with a unique summit - a narrow ridge revealing breathtaking panoramas of Derwentwater, Skiddaw, and the surrounding fells. The trail winds through terrain that has witnessed centuries of human and geological transformation. Ancient scree slopes hint at prehistoric life, with rare fossil discoveries waiting to be found.

We return to the Mansion Hostel where we will enjoy a delicious dinner, followed by an evening enjoying our lakeside rural location which is simply stunning.

Sunday – Lake Derwent
• Distance: 16km (10 miles)
• Grading: Beginner/Intermediate
• Ascent: 150m
• Hiking time: 4 - 5 hours

Today’s relaxed hike winds around the shores of 'Queen of the Lakes' - Derwentwater, offering views of its serene islands and fells mirrored in the water. We’ll visit the market town of Keswick, with its rich mining history and the world's largest pencil. There is an option to take a ferry ride to shorten the hike.

The day culminates with a tasty group barbecue back in the hostel.

Monday – Cat Bells
• Distance: 8km (5 miles)
• Grading: Intermediate
• Ascent: 440m
• Hiking time: 3 - 3.5 hours

Our final day takes us to Cat Bells. We’ll walk in the footsteps of Hugh Walpole, who called this area "a little paradise", and Beatrix Potter, who set her beloved character Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle on these very slopes. The summit offers a breathtaking panorama of Bassenthwaite Lake, Skiddaw, and the stunning landscapes that have inspired generations.

A superb day of hiking with stunning views and a rewarding route, finishing back at the hostel in the early afternoon - typically between 1:20pm and 2pm - leaving plenty of time for a relaxed journey home. This marks the end of the organised trip.
