👣 Hike Description
Escape to the Surrey Hills AONB on this spectacular circular hike from Haslemere, where dramatic landscapes, ancient woodland and fascinating local legends come together. Starting in the charming market town of Haslemere, we'll head through peaceful forests and open heathland towards one of southern England's most iconic natural landmarks – the Devil's Punch Bowl. This impressive natural amphitheatre offers breathtaking panoramic views across rolling heathland.

According to local legend, the Devil carved out the enormous bowl while scooping up earth to throw at Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, who was said to live nearby at Thursley. The unique landscape was actually formed over thousands of years by natural erosion, creating the striking scenery we enjoy today.

Our route continues to Gibbet Hill, the second-highest point in Surrey, where we'll discover the story of the 1786 murder of an unknown sailor. A memorial known as the Sailor's Stone still marks the tragic event and tells the story of one of England's most infamous highway crimes.

Along the way we'll enjoy sweeping views, quiet woodland trails, open heath, and beautiful sections of the Surrey countryside before returning to Haslemere.

We'll finish with time to explore this attractive historic market town, known for its literary heritage and the ancient St Bartholomew's Church, which features a stained-glass window dedicated to Alfred, Lord Tennyson. With its independent cafés, local shops and welcoming atmosphere, Haslemere is the perfect place to relax after a rewarding day on the trails.
