Join me in Death Valley. I am posting this early, because D.V. is very popular in the cooler months and accommodations are limited and fill quickly. Many roads in D.V.N.P. are closed, so unfortunately, we won't be able to visit the Racetrack, Scotty's Castle, or Ubehebe Crater. Gas up before entering the park, Kramer Junction or Ridgecrest. Dress in layers, bring warm clothing.
ITINERARY IS TENTATIVE AND MAY CHANGE BASED ON WEATHER AND OTHER CONDITIONS:
Saturday--early am road trip to Zabriskie Point to catch sunrise. Those staying at Stovepipe should check in with Barb Levi and arrange carpool or caravan. Meet me at Furnace Creek Info Center at 6:00am. Short drive and a short hike to overlook. Optional breakfast at the Ranch 1849 Restaurant (Furnace Creek). Drive to Artists Palette, short hike to colorful eroded rocks. Then Badwater, short or longer hike to the Basin. Sunday, meet me at intersection of 190 and Scotty's Castle Road at 8:00am. Drive to Rhyolite, an abandoned ghost town and the nearby sculpture museum. Bring your drone. Sunday afternoon, meet at parking lot at Mesquite Dunes at 3:30 pm for sunset and full moon. Sunset on Sunday is shortly before the full moon rises, golden hour on the dunes, moon turns yellow, nice moonlight on dunes. I will be hiking to the highest dune. Be aware, hiking on these dunes can be tiring. It would be a good idea to stay together (without getting in each others way) on the way out and back. Bring flashlight.
Optional extension of this event will go to Diaz Lake, Alabama Hills for dronies, snowcapped Sierra and arches, one natural bridge, unique petroglyph site.
