Hi everyone,

We are paddling to Cole island to help them take care of this beautiful little island. Bring **your own canoe, kayak or SUP and join this fun party…**Here is the call from the Friends of Cole island Society
meetup location : Stewart Beach at the end of Stewart Avenue
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Our annual Cole Island clean-up is scheduled for Saturday May 16 from 2pm til 5pm. The tasks will include the usual Broom and Daphne pull and pulling Ivy off the buildings - yes- it's back!. Also, the Colwood Fire Department did an on-site evaluation and they recommended that trees be pruned a few feet up from the ground to reduce fire risk so we’ll be tackling that also. If weather permits we’ll lime wash the weathered section of wall on the guardhouse - but we all know…it never rains on Cole Island! If you’r able to help for a couple of hours that would be great. Please bring gloves, clippers, Ivy pull (if you have one) or anything else you may find helpful to tackle the tasks. Please respond to this email if you’re able to help and I’ll provide the location where we can meet up. Water, pop and snacks provided.

A FAREWELL TO CHARLES
After five years our caretaker, Charles, will be moving on at the end of July. We acknowledge his contributions to Cole Island, notably the brick pathways and handcrafted benches he constructed which transformed the area and will remain as part of the site’s heritage. We are grateful of his care of the island and wish him every success in his next chapter.

NEW CARETAKERS FOR COLE ISLAND
Let’s all welcome our new caretakers, Casey Zharoff and his fiancé Sydney Popoff.

Casey serves as Master Warrant Officer and Range Control Officer at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt. He was born in Port Alberni BC and has been a member of the Canadian Armed Forces since 2005 with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He enjoys history, cooking and outdoor activities of all kinds.

Sydney Popoff was born in Oshawa Ontario and studied to be a Personal Support Worker at Eastern College in Fredericton NB. She currently works for an in-home care company in Langford. Sydney is an avid artist, gardener and home baker.

Hope to see some of you on May 16!
