London chapter of http://www.meetup.com/papers-we-love

(Come over to chat: https://papersweloveslack.herokuapp.com and join #london)

What was the last paper within the realm of computing you read and loved? What did it inspire you to build or tinker with? Come share the ideas in an awesome academic/research paper with fellow engineers, programmers, and paper-readers. Lead a session and show off code that you wrote that implements these ideas or just give us the lowdown about the paper. Otherwise, just come, listen, and discuss in a low ego, friendly environment.

We'll be using and improving papers-we-love's curated repository. Please contribute by adding PR's for papers, code, and/or links to other repositories. We will be recording talks and they will appear on our Youtube Channel.

Please read and follow the Code Of Conduct, please let one of the organisers know if anything makes you uncomfortable.

PWL London: ADTs and CLU with Kevlin Henney

Monzo, Broadwalk House, 5 Appold St, City of London, London EC2A 2AG, London, GB

    Kevlin Henney presents:

"Programming with Abstract Data Types" (1974) and "Abstraction Mechanism in CLU" (1977) by Barbara Liskov (and collaborators).

    Abstract

Data abstraction arrived in the 1970s as a paradigm in its own right. It became absorbed into other paradigms, from object orientation to functional, and has heavily influenced programming language design since. At the heart and start of this was Barbara Liskov's work with the CLU language. In this talk we'll take a trip back to the mid-1970s to explore work led by Liskov in "Programming with Abstract Data Types" and "Abstraction Mechanism in CLU", taking in the context in which these ideas emerged and the long-term influences on program and language design.
