What weβre about
Welcome to the Paris Poetry Circle new Meetup group, where words linger and meaning blooms. π«π
This is the 30th year of our English poetry reading group. We now meet every FOURTH WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH at 6:30 PM (for 7:00 PM), around biscuits and tea. We read and discuss poems, the best we know or can find.
Ourβs is a reading group (as against a writing group). At first reading we do not announce who wrote the poem. We want to hear, read and discuss the poem on its own, whoever wrote it (you, your mother, Shakespeare, a Nobel Laureate, or any poet, published or unpublished). Let the poem stand on its own. Later, we say who the author was. And if it is a living author, we write to thank him.
Anything goes, but ideally we want to read sweet, serious poems that take us forward, help us understand. We do not want boring, pretentious or incomprehensible stuff.
7 or 8 people, intelligent conversation (only in English), some fellowship, no showing offβ¦ it is a good way to spend an evening in midweek in this dry world. So do come and join us. Please ring or e-mail before to let us know because space is limited. You donβt have to talk or bring poems. All are welcome. There is no charge.

Welcome to the Paris Poetry Circle!
Now in its 30th year, our English-language poetry reading group continues to bring together lovers of verse and thought in the heart of Paris. πJoin us this Wednesday evening for a gathering of minds and voices as we read and reflect on poems that move, challenge, and illuminate β all shared over a quiet cup of tea and biscuits. π«βοΈπͺ
We seek poems that are clear yet profound, sweet or serious β those that carry us forward and help us make sense of the world. We steer clear of the obscure or needlessly complex; we value clarity over cleverness, sincerity over show.
Each poem is read anonymously to begin with, without revealing the author, allowing space for open, unbiased interpretation. We then explore it together β carefully, curiously β to uncover what lies beneath the surface.
After the meeting, we write a letter of thanks to the living poets we have read at the group, to thank and congratulate them. We revere all the poets of this world.
The group is small β usually six or seven thoughtful individuals, up to a maximum of ten. The conversation is warm, intelligent, and grounded. There is no performance, no pressure to contribute, and no cost. Only a shared pursuit of insight, beauty, and fellowship.
If that resonates with you, weβd love to welcome you. Bring a poem, or simply bring yourself. πβ¨
