Big Gunpowder Trail (and Wine/Food/Music at Boordy))
Details
Looking to get some exercise, see a new trail, make some new friends, with an optional lunch/Wine at Boordy after?
Try this 4.7-mile loop trail near Perry Hall, Maryland. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 45 min to complete.
This is a very popular area for birding, fishing, and hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.
Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.
This trail has a refreshing swimming hole near the end. The loop follows the upland forests of the fall zone, crossing a few easy streams (pretty much non-existent in the winter) and visiting a pleasant waterfall, then meanders downstream along Big Gunpowder Falls as it leaves the piedmont. Watching Big Gunpowder Falls sliding through several narrow gorges, it is hard to believe that only 5 miles downstream the falls will spread to a delta-like, broad river more than a mile wide.
After we can get some food/music/wine at Boordy Winery.
