Tier 2: Lower Clackamas Paddle - McIver to Barton

Details

Hello fellow kayakers!

Who is up for paddling the Clackamas from lower McIver State Park to Barton? This is a class 2 paddle so it's not entirely flat water. We are asking for folks who have a history of kayaking with us, who can read a river and have good experience maneuvering their boat in moving water. You will want a boat that you are ok with hitting a rock or two once in a while and likely you'll want to take the skeg out. Clackamas River Outfitters has rentals. There is a class 2 rapids at the start that is the biggest rapids on this section of river.

That said, this is a lovely paddle. This river is more in the country than some of the rivers closer to Portland, so you really get the experience of being out in nature. The paddle itself is 3.5 hours for most boaters. We will meet at Barton Park (day use parking lot) on the Clackamas at 10 am and will wait until 10:15 for people to arrive. We will decide the car shuffle logistics and leave some cars there, take the others up to McGiver Park at the lower McGiver Park put in.
If you have larger capacity vehicles, like vans or mini-vans, they are particularly useful.
Barton Park costs $8 to park and McGiver costs $10.

What to bring: sunscreen, water, lunch, dry bag, hat, water shoes, the right boat!
Clear out your car to maximize the carpooling capacity.

** If the river drops too low below 950 I'll likely cancel.

The time of this trip beginning to end is calculated just starting and ending at Barton. You must factor in drive time!

Supporting this group:
We'll happily accept donations for running of this group. All the money goes towards the meetup fees and loaner gear. To donate, please give cash to the event host, or send it via Venmo to @JackBaikov (if it asks for last 4 digits of phone number, they are 7191). Thank you!

Meetup organizers are unpaid volunteers and claim no special expertise or knowledge. We paddle as a group but ultimately you are responsible for your own experience, safety and decision-making.
