Tier 1: Afternoon Paddle on Oswego Lake
Details
After many years of litigation, Oswego Lake is now open to the general public. I just did an exploratory paddle circling the entire lake, and it was great fun. We will NOT go the entire length this time, as that takes about 3.5 hours. Instead, we will focus on several areas near the entry point and will spend about 2 hours on the water.
Please note: There are power boats (not too many on a weekday), which cause waves. Also, it tends to be windy out on the lake. I would recommend a kayak over a SUP.
We will gather around 2:00 PM in the parking lot right after you turn from N State St onto Foothills Rd (please see pin on the map). inflate the kayaks, carry the boats across the street to Lower Millennium Park, and hopefully hit the water by 2:30. We will explore the lake for about 2 hours and return back to the dock. We should be out of the water by 4:30, and all packed up before 5. There is a good chance that some of us might grab dinner nearby.
If you don't have a kayak/SUP and need a seat, or if you need any other equipment, please send me a message.
SUP's and hard-shell kayaks are always welcome.
What to bring:
- A kayak or SUP
- Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and whatever else you need to keep safe
- Sun protection
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Water and snacks
- Waterway Access Permit Info here
Please support our group: Please consider helping us run the group by making a small ($5-$10) donation once per season, more if you are using our equipment. All collected funds will be used for the annual Meetup fee and for purchases of loaner equipment. To donate, please give cash to the event host, or send it via Venmo to @JackBaikov (if it asks for last 4 digits of phone number, they are 7191). Thank you!
A quick reminder that Meetup organizers are unpaid volunteers and claim no special expertise or knowledge. We will paddle as a group but ultimately you are responsible for your own experience, safety and decision-making.
