Peak District Peaks by Prominence - No 5 Black Hill
Details
Our search for Ethels by Prominence is now at the final five! Not too late to join in this hugely enjoyable progression.
Ethel Haythornthwaite was a determined and skilled advocate for the creation of a Peak District National Park in the 1930’s and 1940’s such that it may never have happened without her.
During COVID lockdowns, a local Sheffield man had the idea of recognising this by creating a new classification of Peak District hills equivalent to Scotland's Munro's or the Lake Districts Wainwrights which he called Ethels. These are designated by height and prominence with just 20 having a prominence of 100m or more.
This series of walks aim to visit all of these over the coming months starting with the smallest but in such a way that will make them accessible and enjoyable to all.
Black Hill or Soldiers Lump on Bleaklow is a well known high point on the Pennine Way which this time we are tackling from the informal parking area on the A635 between Wessenden Head Road and the Dovestones Reservoir. See below.
Do bring plenty of snacks and drinks and a lunch packup as unlikely we shall find somewhere for these on our route.
Please take LOTS of pictures and upload them to this Meetup page so everyone can see how much fun you had.
Well behaved dogs are welcome but must be put on a lead near to livestock and should not bark or jump up incessantly.
Lift sharing is strongly encouraged, just leave a message below if offering or asking for a lift.

Don't take too much notice of postcodes in rural areas like this as they are useful only as general indicators of where to go as may cover an area of some considerable size. Read the instructions carefully and check out google links provided to take you to the exact spot.
