Higher Shelf Stones /Aircraft Wrecks Walk From Old Glossop
Details
An earlier than normal start now that our day light hours are decreasing.
Walk length 8.2 miles
Ascent 1,634 ft
A moderate walk.
This circular walk up onto Bleaklow Moor high above Glossop , to the wreckage strewn crash site of the B29 Superfortress Over exposed by Higher Shelf Stones at 621m.
Starting at the Peak District village of Old Glossop, our walk heads off into the hills along Shepley Street/Doctors Gate roman road then onto a footpath to Shelf Moor, are the weathered sculpted rocks of Lower Shelf Stones,
A short distance further on WP4 is the crash site of the USAF Boeing RB-29A Superfortress Bomber Overexposed , which still has a surprisingly large amount of wreckage still at the site. Heading on across Bleaklow Moor to Bleaklow Head WP7 you pass the weather sculpted rocks of Hern Rocks and The Stones.
The return journey follows the Pennine Way across Moss Moor , and then onto Torside Clough, from there we head across Glossop Low to just below Cock Hill, The final stretch back into Old Glossop is along the old Cock Hill Quarry Packhorse track.
Bleaklow is largely peat covered and gritstone moorland, undefined paths, grassy moorland and uneven ground so good walking boots , a pole and gaiters if you wear them are advisable, it's highest point sits at 633m, just three metres lower than Kinder Scout,
Come prepared for all weather, waterproofs, plenty of fluids and a packed lunch.
Please change your RSVP to NO if your plans change and your're a
