About us
Perth Film Lovers is a film club for those who not only love watching movies but love breaking them down with others. It's about sharing the buzz from movies we've enjoyed and discovering what we may've missed in the ones we haven’t.
Outside of the occasional blockbuster at the theatres, movies are posted weekly for members to stream at their leisure. We then meet at cosy locales in town to discuss them over dinner and drinks. Are we easy or hard to please? We rate each film and compare ourselves to IMDB to find out.
It’s an open crew and movies are of all genres, new and old, popular and obscure, so people are welcome to join in on as many or as few meetings as they like. Stick to what appeals or explore something new, it's completely up to you.
Details of upcoming films are posted below. All that's needed is your love for movies and ability to talk... and don't worry, you won't find yourself in a fist fight for a differing opinion, we're a fun loving lot who adhere to the rules in the following link.
For those able to watch movies but not make meetings, the opportunity's still there to be part of the group by posting your score and a brief comment on the event pages. It's almost as much fun and counts for the awards at the end of year event. 🏆🥳

The Odyssey
Johnny Fox’s, 205 James Street, Northbridge, Perth, AUNotice
This event is a get together to discuss the film not watch it. How to watch the film is detailed below. Points you may wish to consider for the discussion can be found here.
Film
Given the sheer magnitude of everything surrounding The Odyssey, it's only fitting that it be our first discussion on a theatrical release.
The Odyssey is directed by Christopher Nolan, who's arguably Hollywood's leading director at the moment, and is based on Homer's epic poem of the titular name which is widely considered to be the foundation of Western literature and modern storytelling.
With an all star cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, The Odyssey is the first feature film to be shot entirely with IMAX film cameras.
... and if all that's not enough, the movie has been shrouded by much controversy which I'll leave you all to find out about yourselves.
A synopsis and trailer can be found here.
How to Watch
The movie is premiering in Australian theatres on Thursday, 16 July.
One of our club's founding members, Lyn, is hosting an IMAX viewing of The Odyssey on Tuesday, 28 July at Event Cinemas in Innaloo through the Dinner and Movie Group on Meetup. Details to Lyn's event can be found here.
Meeting
As always, I’ll be getting to Johnny Fox's just before 6:00pm to sort out my food and drink and welcome everyone who wishes to do the same. For those who do, it's a great way to get to know other members and share what other movies are being watched.
At around 6:30pm, I'll look to give a brief introduction and provide a summary of our scores from the previous week's film. We'll all then share our scores out of 10 for this week's film and break into small groups to discuss it. Rules of conduct for these discussions are set out here. Around 8:30pm we'll rejoin to share our take aways and try to answer and remaining questions with the aim of being finished by 9:00pm.
We have the room booked till 10:00pm and the venue closes at 2:00am so there'll be plenty of time to continue socialising after the event for those who wish to. I usually have a sit down drink at the end and am happy to be joined for it. 🥃
Postal Scores
For those able to watch the movie but not make the meeting, I encourage you to do so and post your score in the Comments section below. It’s a great way to share your thoughts on the movie and gain from those of others if you can't do so in person. It also counts for the awards at the end of year event. 🏆🥳
All Scores
Given we're comparing our scores to those on IMDB, please try to avoid looking at them before landing on yours so as not to be biased. Also, if you’ve seen the movie before, please rewatch it as memories are unreliable and opinions change.
The group’s score, together with anything I find interesting in determining it, will be posted in the Discussion section of the group's home page on the Monday after the event.
Final Words
As always, I look forward to catching up with everyone I've met so far and welcoming anyone joining us for the first time. 👋

Now, Voyager
Johnny Fox’s, 205 James Street, Northbridge, Perth, AUNotice
This event is a get together to discuss the film not watch it. How to watch the film is detailed below. Points you may wish to consider for the discussion can be found here.
Film
Suggested by Veronica, Now Voyager (1942) is our 4th movie from those put forward by members and our first to be filmed in black and white.
Directed by Irving Rapper, Now Voyager is a Betty Davis classic that was released at the height of WWII. It's under film preservation by the US Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and ranks number 23 on the AFI’s list of the top 100 love stories in American cinema.
A synopsis and trailer can be found here.
How to Watch
The movie can be rented for $4.99 on Apple TV and Prime Video.
If you’re unable to rent the movie, send me a message and I’ll send you a link to a copy you can watch.
