About us

Perth Film Lovers is a film club for those who not only love watching movies but love breaking them down with others. It's about sharing the buzz from movies we've enjoyed and discovering what we may've missed in the ones we haven’t.

Outside of the occasional blockbuster at the theatres, movies are posted weekly for members to stream at their leisure. We then meet at different cosy locales around town to discuss them over dinner and drinks.

It’s an open crew and movies are of all genres, new and old, popular and obscure, so people are welcome to join in on as many or as few meetings as they like. Stick to what appeals or explore something new, it's completely up to you.

Details of upcoming films are posted below. All that's needed is your love for movies and ability to talk... and don't worry, you won't find yourself in a fist fight for a differing opinion, we're a fun loving lot who adhere to the rules in the following link.

Film Club Rules

For those able to watch movies but not make meetings, the opportunity's still there to be part of the group by posting your score and a brief comment on the event pages. It's almost as much fun and counts for the awards at the end of year event. 🏆🥳

    Notice

This event is a get together to discuss the film not watch it. How to watch the film is detailed below. Points you may wish to consider for the discussion can be found here.

    Film

The Wicker Man (1973) was the 7th most popular film on our voted upon watch list and our first totally British film.

Starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt and Christopher Lee, it’s is a folk horror that introduced the titular effigy into popular culture and in doing so has gone on to become a cult classic.

A synopsis and trailer can be found here.

    How to Watch

The movie can be streamed for free with a 7-day free trial of Rialto. I suggest cancelling your subscription as soon as you sign up to avoid being charged if you don't wish to continue with it. You'll still be able to watch the movie till the date of renewal.

For those who've already seen the film, I suggest watching again as memories are unreliable and opinions change. Rewatching the film is not however necessary to attend the meeting nor comment on it below if your thoughts are clear.

    Meeting

As always, I’ll be getting to Johnny Fox's just before 6:00pm to sort out my food and drink and welcome everyone who wishes to do the same. For those who do, it's a great way to get to know other members and share what other movies are being watched.

At 6:45pm sharp, I'll look to give a brief introduction and provide a summary of our scores from the previous week's film. We'll all then share our scores out of 10 for this film and break into small groups to discuss it. Rules of conduct for these discussions are set out here. Around 8:30pm we'll rejoin to share our take aways and try to answer any remaining questions with the aim of being finished by 9:15pm.

We have the room booked till 10:00pm and the venue closes at 2:00am so there'll be plenty of time to continue socialising after the event for those who wish to. I usually have a sit down drink at the end and am happy to be joined for it. 🥃

    Scores

A summary of the group’s scores will be posted in the Discussion section of the group's home page on the Monday after the event. Given the first thing in the summary will be a comparison of our score to that on IMDB, please try to avoid seeing that score ahead of landing on yours so as not to be biased.

For those able to watch the movie but not make the meeting, I encourage you to do so and post your score in the Comment section below before the Monday after the event. It’s a great way to still share your thoughts on the movie and gain from those of others.

All scores in whatever way presented count towards the awards that'll be presented at the end of year event. 🏆🥳

    Final Words

As always, I look forward to catching up with everyone I've met so far and welcoming anyone joining us for the first time. 👋

This event is a get together to discuss the film not watch it. How to watch the film is detailed below. Points you may wish to consider for the discussion can be found here.

    Film

Whilst not wanting to make a habit of it, the Movie and Dinner Group's meetup to watch Dangerous Liaisons (1988) at Revival House on Sunday, 20 September has me wishing to again park our 2 watch lists in order to hold a discussion on it.

Starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich in arguably their finest performances, Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman prior to becoming famous and the forever gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer, it's an aristocratic tale of seduction, deceit and revenge which I believe will make for very rich discussions.

It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actress for Close and Best Supporting Actress for Pfeiffer with it ultimately winning 3. 🏆🏆🏆

A synopsis and trailer can be found here.

    How to Watch

For those free at 3:45pm on Sunday, 20th September, Justen from the Movie and Dinner Group is hosting a meetup to watch the movie on 35mm film at Revival House in Como followed by a dinner at the award winning pub restaurant across the road. Further details of this event can be found here.

For those unable to make this event, below is a link to a copy of the movie which can be watched for free. To stream though, it requires high speed internet. If it won't stream, try downloading it using the downward facing arrow in the top left of the screen. If that doesn't work, it can be rented for $4.99 on YouTube.
