Everything Everywhere All At Once
Details
Previous Film
Our previous movie (being our inaugural one chosen by yours truly) was Fight Club, and I think I’m safe to say that (even if it wasn’t enjoyed by all) it made for interesting discussions and we had a very fun night getting together.
In looking at the group’s scores, I was happy to see that the film was enjoyed to the extent hoped. As expected, there were a few people who gave it a beating greater than the one Jared Leto took, but full credit to them for persisting in watching something that clearly wasn’t to their taste. So with that intro, the rating results for our first film were:
- A group score of 7.7 compared to an IMDB sore of 8.8 suggesting that we’re starting off harder to please than the masses.
- With two strong exceptions, the gender split was surprisingly similar with the men rating it a 7.8 and the women a 7.6.
- Not surprising given the twist, the 5 who watched the film for the first time enjoyed it more than the 19 who watched it again, with a score of 8.1 compared to 7.6
The one thing I found most interesting is that (with few exceptions) those who most enjoyed the film were Generation Xers who were the age of the leads at the time that the movie came out whilst those of that age now did not enjoy it as much. In thinking about this I noted that film came out before the twin towers collapsed, the UFC became mainstream and gender equality was not as advanced as it is now.
All in all, I for one was really pleased with how our first watch and discuss went and am now looking forward to the next one even more.
Next film
The most popular movie on our voted upon watch list was Everything Everywhere All at Once with two thirds of those who voted wishing to see it. Below is a link to a synopsis and the trailer.

The movie is available to be streamed for free on Netflix, Prime and Stan. For those not subscribed to these, it can be rented for $2.99 on Apple+, Prime Video, Google Play and YouTube.
Given how cheap it is to rent, I haven’t put a naughty link up for it as I’d like us do the right thing when it's reasonable to do so. This said, if you’re unable to rent the movie for some valid reason, please send me a message and I’ll send you a link on the quiet. 🤫
Meeting
I’ll be getting to Johnny Fox's at 6:00pm to sort out my food and drink and welcome everyone who wishes to do the same. I'll look to give a relatively short introduction at around 6:30pm, after which we'll start discussions on the movie in tables of 5 or 6.
At around 8:30pm we'll rejoin as a whole to share each table's average score out of 10 and have people share their eye openings with the aim of being finished by 9:00pm.
We’ll have the room to 10:00pm and the venue closes at 1:00am so there'll be plenty of time to continue socialising after the event for those who wish to. I'll as always be staying so long as there's conversation to be had.
Ratings
Given the group's average score out of 10 will be compared to that on IMDB, please try to avoid looking at this score before deciding on yours so as not to be biased. Also, if you’ve seen the movie before, please rewatch it as memories are unreliable and opinions change.
The group’s score and that of IMDB will be posted in the discussion section of the event the day after the meeting to see whether we as film lovers are easier or harder to please than the masses.
For those who can't make the event, I encourage you to still watch the movie and message me your rating on the morning of the meeting.
Final Words
Following the fun we've had so far, I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting those who I haven’t already. 👋
