Is pain simply a brain state?

In the 1950s, philosophers such as U. T. Place and J. J. C. Smart defended the mind–brain identity theory: the view that mental states are literally identical to physical states of the brain. On this picture, saying “I am in pain” and saying “a certain neural process is occurring” are ultimately descriptions of the same event.
This view offered a clean materialist alternative to dualism. No immaterial soul, no ghost in the machine, no metaphysical fog machine. Just brains, neurons, and physical processes.
But Hilary Putnam raised a powerful objection: multiple realizability.
A human, a dog, an octopus, an alien, or even an artificial system might all experience pain while having radically different physical structures. If the same mental state can be realized by many different physical states, then pain cannot be identical to one specific type of brain state.
This led to the rise of functionalism, according to which mental states are defined not by what they are made of, but by the roles they play. Pain is typically caused by injury, produces distress, interacts with beliefs and desires, and leads to avoidance behavior. Different physical systems might realize that same pattern in different ways.
The reductionist, however, has a reply: the disjunctive strategy.
Perhaps pain is not identical to one neural state. Perhaps pain is identical to a giant physical disjunction:

  • neural state N₁ in humans,
  • neural state N₂ in dogs,
  • neural state N₃ in octopuses,
  • silicon state S₁ in machines,
  • and every other physical state capable of realizing pain.

Formally, this seems to preserve reduction. Pain is still identical to something physical—just something much more complicated.
But does this strategy actually explain pain, or does it merely rename the problem?
The physical states in the disjunction may share no meaningful physical feature. They are grouped together only because they all realize pain. In that case, the mental concept is doing the real explanatory work, while the physical disjunction is stitched together after the fact.
During this meeting, we will examine:

The central issue is not simply whether the mind is physical.
A mental state might be completely dependent on physical processes while still resisting reduction to any single brain state or lower-level physical description. The brain may realize the mind without providing the only legitimate level at which the mind can be understood.
