About us

Looking for thoughtful book discussions, good company, and an excuse to explore Sydney’s pubs at a very civilised pace? If you’re a guy in your 30s or 40s who enjoys debating ideas and hearing how others experienced a book you’ve just read, this might be your kind of book club.

We’re a group of intellectually curious blokes who meet once a month to discuss philosophical fiction, along with the occasional sci-fi, dystopia, or literary novel with big ideas. We’re not literature professors or philosophy experts, just guys who want more from our reading than a good plot. We’re after books that wrestle with meaning, human nature, morality, freedom, faith, and how to live well.

We like to call what we do The Slowest Pub Crawl in Sydney. Each month we meet at a different pub, always over a drink and always with a book. Instead of hopping bars in one night, we take it slowly, one venue per month and one book per month. Over time, it becomes a gentle crawl through both great literature and some of the city’s best pubs.

This is intentionally a men’s book club. Not out of disrespect to women, but because we’re creating a space where men can connect through ideas and conversation. Many of us do not often get the chance to talk openly about deeper thoughts, doubts, or values, and we have found this format encourages genuine, grounded connections among men.

Most of us are juggling work, family, and busy lives, so we keep it simple. One book a month, no pressure to be academic, and no expectation that you have all the answers. We meet, have a beer, and let the conversation unfold, sometimes structured, sometimes meandering, often unexpectedly personal.

You will also read books that fall squarely into the “I wouldn’t have picked this up on my own” category. Half the fun is discovering authors and ideas you did not know you were missing.

We are open to new members. If philosophical fiction appeals to you and the idea of a very slow pub crawl sounds like your pace, come along and see if it is your thing.
