Are We Really Thinking for Ourselves?
With Sarah Paz
A Philosophical Dialogue on Perception, Influence & Independent Thought
We live in a time with access to more information than any generation before us.
But does having more information mean we are thinking more deeply?
Every day, we are surrounded by opinions, algorithms, social expectations, cultural influences, headlines, trends, and endless streams of content. Without realizing it, some of these influences may begin to shape the way we see ourselves, other people, and the world.
So an uncomfortable question arises:
How much of what we think have we actually examined for ourselves?
Are our opinions really our own?
How much are they shaped by our environment?
Why do we sometimes defend ideas we have never seriously questioned?
And is questioning our own assumptions a sign of uncertainty or an essential part of learning to think?
More than 2,000 years ago, Plato explored this human problem through one of philosophy’s most powerful images: the Allegory of the Cave.
People observe shadows on a wall and take them for reality—not because they are unintelligent, but because those shadows are the only reality they have ever known.
What are the shadows of our time?
And perhaps more importantly:
How would we recognize them if we were looking at them every day?
Join us at New Acropolis Deerfield Beach for an open philosophical dialogue inspired by Plato, exploring perception, social influence, assumptions, and the challenge of developing a more conscious and examined way of thinking.
No previous knowledge of philosophy is required. Come with curiosity, questions, and a willingness to examine ideas together.
Perhaps the challenge is not simply to have opinions, but to discover where they came from.
