THIS WEEK: Most of us identify ourselves by means of our names, family, gender, age, ethnicity, culture and our personal history. But we are aware that something else also constitutes our identity. Barry Dainton contrasts ‘the phenomenal self’ (of our consciousness) with ‘the psychological self’ (of our minds) which consists of all our thoughts, memories and feelings. After considering what we are, we must also think about who we are. Can this question be answered in terms of facts about our lives, or must it be answered in terms of our values, what we identify with and what we aspire to?
