## What Is the Chicago Philosophy Association?

The Chicago Philosophy Association (CPA) is a community for curious people who want to explore the questions beneath everyday life:
Who am I? What makes life meaningful? Does God exist? Is morality objective? What is consciousness? Can AI ever become a person? What can we really know?
You don't need a philosophy degree or have a father who thinks he is a philosopher with a pipe!
CPA brings together professionals, students, professors, skeptics, believers, and lifelong learners for thoughtful conversation, lively debate, and genuine community.

## What We Explore

🧠 Mind, Consciousness & Personal Identity
What is the self? Are we simply our brains? Could consciousness survive the body?
⚖️ Ethics & the Good Life
What makes something right or wrong? Is morality objective or relative? What does it mean to live well?
🌌 God, Religion & Reality
Does God exist? What are the strongest arguments for and against belief? How should we think about faith, reason, miracles, suffering, Christianity, Islam, and other religious traditions?
🤖 AI, Technology & Humanity
Can machines think or become conscious? What makes human beings unique in an age of increasingly intelligent machines?
🔬 Science, Knowledge & Truth
What can science tell us—and where are its limits? How do we distinguish knowledge from opinion, ideology, and misinformation?
🌍 Philosophy & Contemporary Life
Culture, education, politics, technology, relationships, justice, free speech, meaning, and the philosophical questions behind current events.

## More Than a Discussion Group

CPA gatherings may include round-table discussions, guest speakers, debates, books, films, food, and social events.
Sometimes philosophy happens around a lecture table.
Sometimes it happens over pizza, wine, bourbon, and cigars.
Either way, the goal is the same: better questions, deeper thinking, meaningful conversation, and interesting people.

### Come Think With Us.

Whether you've studied philosophy for decades or you're simply curious about life's biggest questions, there's a seat for you at the table.

Alone in a Crowd: Why We Are More Connected and Lonelier Than Ever

Alone in a Crowd: Why We Are More Connected and Lonelier Than Ever

333 E Ontario St, 333 E Ontario St, Chicago, IL 60611, USA, Chicago, IL, US

A free night of philosophy, wine and real conversation.
We have never been more connected. Hundreds of contacts. Group chats that never stop buzzing. A city of almost three million people right outside the window.
And yet so many of us go home at night feeling alone, wondering what it is all for.
Loneliness is not only about having no one around. It is about having no answer to the oldest question in philosophy: how should I live?
Nearly two thousand years ago, the most powerful man in the world wrestled with this in his private journal. Marcus Aurelius was emperor of Rome. He was surrounded by crowds every single day, and he still had to remind himself of three things:
1. We were made for each other. Marcus wrote that people are built to work together, like hands, feet and eyelids. Isolation is not freedom. It goes against our nature.
2. Peace is an inside job. People hunt for quiet getaways by the sea or in the mountains, he wrote, but the best retreat is within your own mind. You can be alone in a crowd, or at home in yourself.
3. People will let you down. Expect it every morning, and choose kindness anyway. Connection takes practice, not luck.
On Thursday night we take these ideas off the page and into our lives. I will give a short talk, then we will talk honestly in small groups. Wine and snacks are on us.
You will leave with one daily practice from Marcus Aurelius for feeling less alone, and a few new friends who ask the same big questions.
WANT TO GO DEEPER? This night is a taste of my four week class, How to Be a Perfect Human, starting Monday, Nov 9. Plato, Marcus Aurelius, Viktor Frankl and Descartes, read slowly with 12 serious people around one table. Details here: https://luma.com/4xrghzi8
No philosophy background needed. Bring yourself, and maybe a friend who has been feeling the same thing.
Free. Seats are limited to 30, so please RSVP.
